I have more than four decades of experience as a broadcast, print and digital journalist. I have excellent skills and abilities honed during the years leading news and public affairs staffs; and providing day-to-day management.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
JOURNALISM
During 20-year military public affairs career; successfully managed six military weekly newspapers.
At KOTA TV, I was the assignment editor as well as senior reporter with extensive expertise in military issues; ending my broadcast career as the assistant news director. As the station's first digital content manager, I assisted in a total redesign of the online news operation as well as performing day-to-day administrative and content responsibilities.
As the MyTown editor, I combined my print and broadcast journalism experiences to add content and depth to the community news website; including producing my own multi-media stories.
My journalism honors include two from the Associated Press for investigative reporting and a documentary series. During my military career, I earned 13 awards for editorial, news and sports writing, photojournalism and newspaper management.
PLANNING/MANAGEMENT
During the Persian Gulf War (1990-1991), was responsible for developing plans, policies and procedures as well as providing guidance for public affairs
officers in the Persian Gulf Theater. During and after Operation Desert Storm, managed 25-person media division that was responsible for all media relations in Persian Gulf.
As assignment editor and then assistant news director at KOTA-TV, responsibilities included developing and assigning stories for three daily newscasts and website; and assisting the news director in developing and implementing policies and procedures.
Within a year of taking over the website MyTown; effectively increased readership by adding multi-media stories; recruiting community input; and using social media to promote the community news site. I followed this up with a total redesign of the site.
As KOTA-TV News' first digital content manager, I was involved in a massive redesign of the online operation, not only a revamped news website but also increased emphasis on social media and mobile platforms.
COMMUNITY RELATIONS
Assisted in planning and execution of air shows and Air Force open houses with an average attendance of more than 100,000 people.
Organized community interaction between U.S. troops and local communities while serving in Turkey, Italy and England.
MEDIA RELATIONS
Worked with national and international media during the 1990-1991 Gulf War; providing accurate daily operational information as well as fact-checking stories upon media request; also analysis of military operations; and performed duties as an official spokesman before, during and after hostilities.
Provided government public affairs assistance during disasters such as Hurricane Andrew in Florida, 1992; and Middle East tensions in 1993.
